First Date contestant Maria broke down in tears after admitting that she was catfished by her best friends.
The singleton revealed to her date Albert that her former mates texted her pretending to be a guy named Will, claiming they’d met on a night out, however later confessed to setting her up when they made plans to meet.
Explaining the heart-wrenching tale, Maria began: ‘I went out for my brother’s birthday and the next day I got a text from Will.
‘So I was texting this Will and I said to my pals at the time, “Oh, Will’s coming tonight.” And they were like, “We know, we’re Will.”‘ [sic].
Maria added: ‘They knew I wanted a boyfriend. They knew my weaknesses. They were my best friends.’
Speaking directly to the cameras, Maria shed a few tears as she recalled the sick revelation.
‘I don’t really understand how you can manipulate and make someone feel so small,’ she said.
‘I went home and I cried all the way home. How can you toy with my emotions like that?’
Wiping away her tears, Maria apologised: ‘Sorry, I never thought I’d get emotional about it. I haven’t got emotional about it for so long.’
Viewers were seething at Maria’s ex-mates and made their feelings known on Twitter, writing: ‘What?! She got catfished by her “friends” thats f****** horrific! People can be so horrible.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘Imagine being catfished by your “mates” literally the lowest of the low.’
Sadly for Maria though she didn’t meet her match in Albert, despite agreeing to see each other again.
‘In the end, Albert wasn’t quite ready to wade into deeper water with Maria but Maria knows there are plenty more fish in the sea,’ the tagline read at the end of the episode.
First Dates airs Tuesdays at 9pm on Channel 4.
