EastEnders legend Pam St Clements has spoken out about the death of her former co-star Leslie Grantham, who passed away last month. Revealing that he was always naughty and liked to test people, she recalled a moment when he referred to her on set as a great white whale but reasoned that it was better not to take offence.
Speaking as a panellist on Loose Women, the star, best known for playing earring loving Pat Butcher, said of his death: That was a heck of a shock actually. I was never particularly close to Leslie apart from in a work sense. He was a devil you know, hed test you. If you didnt pass the test then that was it, he left you to your own devices.
But I remember one time, we were joking about and I walked into the Vic and he was there and he said, “oh hello, its a great white whale.” Yes I quite agree, charming!
But then I could see him (laughing) and I was like, “yeah you were just waiting to see how Id reacted werent you, you naughty boy?”. Had I got all uppity and said Im not speaking to you again or whatever. There were people who used to get upset by Leslie because he didnt behave particularly well but there we are.
She added: Its very sad that hes died and its very sad that he died because he was in dire circumstance after he left EastEnders, under a cloud somewhat. Im afraid to say, nobody should have to pay for their misadventures by dying. And Im sorry for that and Im sorry for his family.
Since her exit from EastEnders, Pam has made it clear that she would have liked to have had the option of returning to the show had her alter ego not died. She has had a recurring role since in Casualty.
