When I went gluten-free several years ago, there was one thing I missed the most: fish and chips.
Yet, these are usually not remotely gluten-free friendly.
Not only is the batter made with wheat flour but even the chips are out of the question since products are often cooked in the same fryer, which causes cross contamination. No, deep-frying doesn’t kill the gluten.
However, Coeliac-friendly fish and chip shops are now popping up all over the UK.
So, I took to Twitter to ask gluten-free folk all over the country to recommend their favourite free-from chippies:
The Real Food Cafe is in the top 60 fish and chip shops in the UK.
It’s accredited by Coeliac UK and has a complete gluten-free menu, including fudge cake.
Fresh line caught fish and 100% chicken breast bites are some of the gluten-free highlights at this fish and chip shop.

They have three dedicated fryer baskets and also serve BrewDog gluten-free beer.
Leadbelly’s is not accredited by Coeliac UK but came highly recommended on Twitter.

They also offer gluten-free burgers, roasts and four varieties of gluten-free beer.
