As well as getting to explore some of the most amazing natural wonders of the world, a perk of working on Blue Planet 2 must be working with David Attenborough.
Series producer Orla Doherty reveals to us that working with the 91-year-old nature broadcaster has been ‘one of the greatest joys of her life’, as well as exclusively teasing a third series – something she can’t imagine happening without Attenborough at the helm.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Orla tells us: ‘He’s an absolute genius, he’s a master story teller. He takes the films and he turns them into something extraordinary, by adding his voice and the way he works with words.
‘The way he delivers what he writes. It’s just incredible to really see him and see his take on what we’ve done.
‘It’s been an absolute joy, probably one of the greatest joys of my life to actually have the privilege of making these films with him.’
Asked whether she can imagine anyone else doing Attenborough’s job in the show, Orla responds: ‘No (I can’t imagine anyone else in that role). David Attenborough is David Attenborough.’
So how close are we to getting a third series of Blue Planet? The acclaimed second series – which was the most-watched TV show in 2017 – has only just concluded, but it’s the question on everyone’s lips.
Orla says a third series has yet to be commissioned by the Beeb, but that there’s ‘always room for another major series on the ocean.’ Sounds optimistic to us! Especially considering – fact alert – that 70% of the earth’s surface is ocean.
She says: ‘Well, wouldn’t it lovely (to have a third series) but at the moment we’re all just dusting our desks off and thinking about what’s next.
‘No, we’re not (at the recommissioning stage yet).
‘There is always going to room for another major series on the ocean because the ocean is simply so unexplored, because we’re finding new stories, new events that happen in it.’
‘I mean look at all the revelations that happen in Blue Planet 2. But, it also takes a lot of time, it takes a monumental effort, to make something like this, so we’ll see.
More: David Attenborough
‘There will always be scope to do more in the ocean.’
So can she imagine herself producing the next series? Well when we discussed with Orla what she’d like to do next in her career, she insisted it had to be something to do with oceans.
She tells us: ‘I have absolutely no idea (what I’m going to do next). I have been so utterly heads down focused on Blue Planet 2 I’m only truly beginning to come up for air and figure that out, so I don’t know yet.
‘For me it’s always something that keeps one toe in the ocean. As long as there’s an ocean connection in there somewhere I’ll be perfectly happy.’
